This photograph was made in the Yukon in autumn when the Avens are in seed. The plant is a "pioneer" species, it can thrive in poor soil and harsh conditions. It is usually one of the first plants in a disturbed area such as avalanche runs. As it grows it fixes nitrogen into the soil, which benefits itself but also helps other plants get established by enriching the soil.
