British Columbia had a long hot summer resulting in a large number of forest fires, the worst year in the province's history. Some of the fires were near towns or electrical lines, requiring skilled teams of forest firefighters to contain them. The government has had to bring people in from as far away as New Zealand and Australia in the effort to bring these blazes under control. This picture was made about three kilometres from a forest fire, the haze in the background is smoke from the fire. The picture was made in the north end of Vancouver Island, close to an area called the "Deval's Bath", a large crater-like area that is filled with water (and also drained) by an underground river system. (It is not visible in the picture)
