This picture was made in Canada's Pacific Rim National Park. The trees are Shoreline Pine trees, they are growing about 500m from the ocean. Here the weather is severe, with strong winds and salt spray. It can take 100 years for a tree to grow 1m in these conditions. Worse yet, there is a layer of soil about 1m down that is hard and impermiable to water. Consequently the area is a bog. You can see many remains of dead Shoreline Pine in the area, the hard wood does not rot quickly so a stump lasts a long time.
