It is a problem trying to correctly identify the variety of Flicker we have photographed, especially with a female. The Flicker varieties themselves inter-breed, so even they have identity problems! Although the species is a type of woodpecker, Flickers like to eat berries and ground dwelling insects more than the in-tree food sources. They are said to be the N. American bird with the largest fraction of diet consisting of ants.
