Cotton-Grass

Previous photograph Back to the gallery page Next photograph

This patch of cotton-grass was photographed along the Dempster Highway in late August. What looks like flowers is actually the seed head, the fine white cottony bristles aid in the distribution of the seeds by wind. Cotton grass can be found growing in wet meadows and bogs, it's fibrous stems decay slowly and aid in the formation of peat.
