Tintina Trench

Previous photograph Back to the gallery page Next photograph

Dawson City, in the Yukon lies at the western end of the meeting of two continental plates. The line between these plates, called the Tintina Trench, continues eastward for several hundred kilometres. It is visible here as the valley seen through the fog, from the Klondike Highway some 60 kilometres from Dawson.

The gold, by the way, is mostly found in the plate just south of the trench. For all we know, we might have parked on top of solid gold! The trench, does continue past Dawson although it isn't an easily discernible feature in that area. But it is why the sprawling metropolis of Chicken, Alaska is known as a gold producing region.
