The Yukon River, North of Dawson City

Previous photograph Back to the gallery page Next photograph

This photograph of the Yukon River was made from the top of Midnight Dome Mountain. The Yukon was the main transportation route to Dawson City during the famous Klondike gold rush. (The Klondike River is south of this viewpoint) The mountain gets its name because it is supposed to be the only place in this area that receives the midnight sun on June 21. In fact the 888m mountain might have been high enough if it wasn't for the 1800+m Ogilvie Mountains you see in the distance which block the sun. The trip to the top of mountain is only about 10km from Dawson City. The river, and the city, has an elevation of about 320m.
