Cottonwood Grove

This grove of (we think) Cottonwood Trees are close to Pitt Lake, east of Vancouver and on the north side of the Fraser river. The background is the steep slopes of Golden Ears. This area is a bird sanctuary and is home to several species of waterfowl in the winter.

Unfortunately the images available over the web cannot hold the detail of the original. For example you can see ducks in the original image, but they are indistinguishable from the background in these images. A Nikon 80-200mm lens, noted for its resolution, was used. This image was made onto Kodak Gold 100 film and scanned at 10,000 samples per square millimetre. A small section of the original scanned image is shown below against a 3x magnification of the same area from the 1600 x 1200 image.
