Seedhead of the Western Anemone

Previous photograph Back to the gallery page Next photograph

We were in the Alpine Meadows of Manning Park with huge numbers of Anemone seedheads dotting the landscape. This plant is pretty but it is somewhat poisonous and can cause skin rashes just by handing it. Most people only know the seedheads because this plant blooms very early in the season. The seeds of this plant are designed to be dispersed with the next strong wind.

The detail in this image is particularly striking in a large print or display.

In the following image you can see the seeds on their stalk. This plant was taken just a little way from the first image. Some passing hiker, animal or maybe the wind removed half of the seeds - exposing the core of the head.
