Flutterby

Most of the English dictionaries have mistakenly taken the Spoonerism "Butterfly" for the proper word for these insects: "Flutterby". The roots of the word "flutterby" is obvious once you have seen one in flight. As we are not flutterby experts, we don't know the particular species of the one pictured here. This female was busy laying eggs (apparently) into the flowers in an alpine meadow. This brief activity was just long enough to grab an image before she took flight. Sometimes a certain amount of luck is needed to get good, sharp photographs!

The out of focus background of this image contains too many different colours to render well in the GIF format. Consequently all of our larger resolution backgrounds of this image are in JPEG format only.
