Here is a picture of a typical forest at the lower elevations of the Cascade mountain range. This image was made near the end of Lightening Lake Chain trail. The foreground is the bottom of a scree slope which is why only bushes and other low vegetation survives. Beyond the scree slope is good soil kept moist by the nearby lake. It supports a mixture of trees dominated by cedar and fir.
