Tree Fern

Previous photograph Back to the gallery page Next photograph

These ferns were photographed in the "Fern Glen" at Vancouver's Van Dusen Gardens. The extensive glen has dozens of different ferns on multiple pathways. These were well shaded except for a shaft of light coming towards the camera lens, allowing you to see sunlight both reflecting off the top and penetrating the fronds (fern "leaves").

Tree Ferns prefer very humid conditions and can be found in the rainforests of New Zealand to southeastern Australia. They are true ferns forming a trunk, which can reach up to 15 m high depending on the species.
