Hydrangea

Previous photograph Back to the gallery page Next photograph

Here's a close-up of the flower head of a Hydrangea plant. The plant itself is a tall shrub, about 2 metres in height. The flower head is a global of flowers about 20cm in diameter. (In fact the little buttons in the middle are the flowers, they are surrounded by "sepals") The blue of this particular Hydrangea head indicates that it's soil is somewhat alkaline and contains aluminum. In acidic soils this plant would have pink flower balls.
