Here's a simple pastoral scene made this spring in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. The field has probably been used for agriculture for hundreds of years. The reason for the picture is the step erosion in the steep area visible in the centre and right where is land is the steepest. There is a Bavarian tradition of sending their cattle into the mountains in the summer. Environmentalists are concerned about this practice because they are the cause of step erosion. The alpine soil is more fragile than the soil pictured and takes longer to recover.
